What is a comeback?
In this project, a comeback happens when a team loses the first set but goes on to win the match. This gives us a clear way to measure how often teams recover from an early disadvantage.
Why the first set?
The first set gives one team an early advantage, but it does not determine the match. NCAA volleyball matches are played as best-of-five, meaning the first team to win three sets wins the match. The first four sets are played to 25 points, while a deciding fifth set is played to 15. A team must win a set by at least two points.
Why study comebacks?
Volleyball can change quickly. A team that loses the opening set still has opportunities to adjust its strategy, respond to its opponent, and win the remaining sets. I wanted to know how often that actually happens across NCAA volleyball rather than relying only on memorable comeback matches.
My research question
How often does an NCAA volleyball team win after losing the first set?
I analyzed 482 NCAA volleyball matches to calculate the comeback rate and examine whether match length is related to the likelihood of coming back. The sample includes 230 three-set matches, 152 four-set matches, and 100 five-set matches. These are observed results from this dataset, not proof that match length causes comebacks.
